  Learning Support Unit

Success only ever comes before work in the dictionary

Information for Parents/Guardians

Leon School and Sports College is committed to enabling your child to have a successful education.

We work hard to maintain an environment in which the education of all our young people can take place without disruption.  Students who continually cause disruption in classrooms take away the rights of others to learn.  Just as importantly, those students severely limit their own educational success. The Learning Support Unit is part of a whole school strategy to support students who are at risk of  exclusion. It is an early intervention programme.

The LSU will work with a student by:

Planning a short term teaching programme that addresses their needs.

Maintaining contact with mainstream classes enabling successful reintegration into all lessons.

Working closely with parents to set targets for their child.

Providing opportunities  for them to reflect on the consequences of their behaviour.

Raising self esteem.

Aims of the LSU:

To teach students how to become active learners in the mainstream classroom.

To help students re-engage with the curriculum.

To set high standards of academic performance within the students ability range.

To generate effective relationships between students, staff and parents.

To set high, but realistic expectations for personal conduct.

Referrals  Referrals to the LSU are made by the Heads of Year. The referral will be based on evidence generated through the schools monitoring systems such as withdrawal room data, communication slips, detention data, and module scores..  A suitable support programme is discussed and agreed.

Parent/ Guardian Involvement in the LSU.   We are committed to working in partnership. After a referral has been agreed, the LSU manager will invite you to the school to go through a support programme.  It is vital you come along as your skills and your understanding of your child are important for us to know and use in the programme.  LSU staff will contact you regularly by telephone, letter or a note in your child’s school diary.  You are encouraged to contact the LSU if you have any concerns or wish to keep track of their progress.  You and your child will be involved in setting and reviewing  targets to check their progress towards re-integration. At the end of the programme their will be an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of your child.

Support Programme  A suitable support programme is drawn up for students that will involve withdrawal to the LSU for a proportion of their timetable. Their     placement may be part time or full time, this will be discussed at the pre- entry meeting.  If your child is already working with the Progress team, Learning Mentors or External agencies this will continue.  Your child will follow a programme that will last for an initial 3 week period.

The Curriculum in the LSU.  We have the same high expectations of behaviour and work.  Students who are supported by LSU staff follow the same school rules; we will discuss these with you at the pre entry interview. Whilst in the LSU your child will study Literacy, Numeracy and Science, in addition they will take part in several courses to develop skills in behaviour management, assertiveness and classroom survival.    It is our aim to get your child back in to their Mainstream classes.  After an exit interview re-integration will take place, LSU staff will support your child throughout this process and monitor their progress for a short time after their finish their support programme in the LSU.
